7 Actions the Best Leaders Take To Support Well Being!

By Jim Kirwan,

The CEO, C Suite and senior executives quite rightly ask those responsible [usually HR] to justify their recommended investments in Well Being initiatives and projects. However in doing so, I wonder do they realise just how much their own actions can influence the success of these investments? Here are 7 actions leaders can take immediately which could be the difference between success and failure.

  1. Encourage greater participation and engagement in your Well Being initiatives by your words, actions and deeds!
  2. Participate in as many Well Being activities as you can. Set the example and your team will follow you.
  3. Demonstrate your support by actually walking the talk! For example what about moving your parking spot to the one furthest away?
  4. Support the decisions made by the Well Being team, even if their decision is not exactly what you would have done!
  5. Agree policy changes which facilitate and encourage employees to develop healthy behaviours. What about encouraging stand up or walking meetings?
  6. Recognise the Well Being achievements of individual employees, managers, departments, sites, etc.
  7. Provide financial support to encourage “Sustained Healthy Lifestyle for Everyone”!

Developing a “Sustained Healthy Lifestyle” for everyone, is just one of the key elements of the Well Being & Lifestyle Conference in The Davy Group, 49 Dawson Street, Dublin 2 on 30th November.

Early Bird Pricing Until 15th September

As some of you may have missed earlier posts and articles because of holidays, I have decided to extend early bird pricing until the 15th September. Go to the Conference website and sign up now.

As an added incentive to take action today, I’ll send all “early birds” a signed copy of my best selling book The eXercise Factor. It shows you how to “Ease into the best shape of your life regardless of your age, weight or current fitness level” and it will give you a really good insight into what I mean by a “Sustained Healthy Lifestyle for Everyone”.

What Can A Sustained Healthy Lifestyle Do For You?

By Jim Kirwan,

According to the late Steve Jobs, Apple don’t sell computers but what they can do for you! He said don’t sell a product, sell the dream! So likewise I’m not trying to sell you health, fitness, a conference or even a “Sustained Healthy Lifestyle”. Instead, I’m selling what you can do with it or if you prefer, what it can do for you!

So what can a “Sustained Healthy Lifestyle” do for you?

Not sure why but when I ask that question, I always think of the Monty Python movie “Life of Brian” and the scene where they ask “What did the Romans ever do for us?” Well here’s 10 things I can think of straight away:

  1. You can significantly increase your life expectancy; the amount of time you have left!
  2. More importantly, you can significantly improve the quality of your life, for the rest of your life!
  3. You can ease into the best shape of your life and it doesn’t matter how old you are, how heavy you are or how active you are today!
  4. You’ll feel fitter, stronger, more energetic and yes faster if that is important to you.
  5. You’ll feel sharper, smarter and more creative than you have been for a long time.
  6. You’ll feel and maybe even look younger, as your biological clock slows down, while your chronological clock keeps ticking away.
  7. You’ll lose weight the right way, gradually and progressively and importantly from a health perspective, you’ll lose a few sizes off your waist.
  8. You’ll be able to do some things you thought you’d never be able to do again.
  9. You’ll be able to play with your grand-kids for much longer than you ever thought possible.
  10. Overall, you’re going to feel so much better and you’re going to like the way you feel, a lot!

Developing a “Sustained Healthy Lifestyle” for everyone, is one of the key elements of the Well Being & Lifestyle Conference in The Davy Group, 49 Dawson Street, Dublin 2 on 30th November.

Should HR Be Responsible For Employee Well Being?

By Jim Kirwan,

This is a question I asked in an article back in May and it got 527 clicks! But perhaps more importantly, it got more comments and likes [75] than any other of my 76 LinkedIn articles, so far. So I think it resonated with many of you who saw it.

There is no doubt that HR are universally responsible for what I refer to as Employee and Organisation Well Being but how successful have they been? In America where I have spent most of the last 15 years, the answer is not very successful. In Ireland, if we use employee engagement figures as our yardstick, the answer seems pretty clear to me; according to Gallop 85% of Irish employees are disengaged!

Is Well Being A Poisoned Chalice?

As in America, maybe Well Being is becoming a poison chalice in Ireland too. Now, just in case anyone thinks I’m against taking Well Being initiatives, let me be clear, I’m all about helping people develop a “Sustained Healthy Lifestyle” and I believe HR have a huge opportunity to champion this! However, it’s the way this is done that I have some problems with. In response, in America I developed my signature talk FIT-CEO which I have presented on many occasions.

In Ireland, I decided to go a step further and create a Well Being and Lifestyle Conference. It’s called FIT-CEO Optimum Performance and will take place on the 30th November 2017, in The Davy Group, 49 Dawson Street, Dublin 2.
